HIgh above the famous market town of Otavalo in the Ecuadorian Andes, numerous small highland villages still struggle to benefit from the region's economic gains. The photos in this portfolio show the beautiful, vibrant children who attended the primary school in the tiny village of Urcusiqui, Ecuador in 2006. The village was a recipient of volunteers and support from the non-profit group Global Vision International, which provided support and volunteer teachers to assist with teaching primary school students in Urcusiqui and a handful of other villages in the highlands above Otavalo. After working in Urcusiqui during a Spanish-language immersion for six weeks, fellow former Breckenridge resident Guy Natanel and I raised funds back home through a film and photography exhibit to support the oldest class of students to continue on to secondary school in Otavalo.
